Winchester is steeped in history. It was once the capital of England and remained a residence for Royals for centuries. Winchester’s most famous landmark is the gothic Cathedral which was originally built in 1079 and is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe.
Other famous historic landmarks include St Cross Hospital which was constructed in 1130, Winchester College founded in 1382 and the Great Hall which is the only remaining part of Winchester Castle.
There are many peaceful green areas in the city such as The Water Meadows where the Romantic poet John Keats used to walk and through which the River Itchen flows. The river also powers The City Mill; a working mill in the heart of Winchester.
